Aquatic Frequently Asked Questions

We have knowledgable staff at Willowbrook Aquatics that will be able to answer any of your pressing questions. Unlike the internet, we do have to sleep so hopefully the list below should help.

Why is my pond water green?

Green pond water is usually caused by millions of tiny microscopic algae floating in the water. The algae thrive and multiply in sunlight and in water with an excess of nutrients such as fish waste, uneaten food and decaying leaves.

How do I clear green pond water?

The most effective option is using a correctly sized UV clarifier alongside adequet filtration. As water passes through the UV unit, the algae cells are destroyed and can be removed by the filter. Water clarity will improve within days and may clear with a week or two.

What fish can I keep together in a garden pond?

Many pond fish species can live happily together, provided adequete space and filtration. Popular combinations include goldfish, shubunkins, comets, koi, orfe and tench. When choosing, consider their adult size, feeding requirements and size of your pond. Our staff will be able to help you - please come in and have a chat.

How can I attract wildlife to my pond?

The key is to provide habitats both in and around your pond. Provide logs, rocks and native plants on the borders to provide shelter. Inside the pond, add a range of marginal, floating & oxygenating plants. Don't forget to provide shallow areas or a gentle slope to allow wildlife in and out!

What are the best native pond plants for UK ponds?

Some of the best native pond plants for the UK include - Hornwort and Water Crowsfoot for oxygenating weed; White water lily and frogbit for surface cover, Marsh marigold and Ragged robin for colourful marginals; Brooklime and Water forget-me-mot for wildlife friendly options.

Why is my fish tank turning green?

The green is caused by free floating algae which multiply when there is too much light or excess of nutrients in the water. Try to limit lighting to 6-8 hours a day, reduce feeding and increase water changes.

What are the easiest aquarium plants for beginners?

Hardy low maintenance plants that require no specialist equipment include - Amazon Swords and Vallisneria for tall background plants; Cryptocorynes and Staurogyne for midground; Dwarf sagittaria and Java moss for foreground.

What temperature should my fish tank be?

Cold water tanks should be between 18-22°C. The vast majority of Tropical fish are happiest kept between 24°C and 26°C. However there are exceptions like Discus that are typically kept at 28-30°C.

How often should I change the water in my Aquarium?

Regular water changes are one of the important parts of keeping a healthy aquarium. For most aquariums, a 20-30% water change once a week. For lightly stocked tanks - once a fortnight is plenty, whereas heavily stocked tanks may need up to 40% a week or more.

What are the best tropical fish for beginners?

Choosing hardy, peaceful small fish will make your aquarium much easier to care for. Guppies, Platys and Mollys are all active, colourful hardy fish that mix well with others. Corydoras and Bristlenoses are great starter catfish for the bottom of your tank.

Do I need an air pump in my aquarium?

Air pumps are beneficial but not always needed. The filter provides enough movement to oxygenate the water. However in hot weather or heavily stocked tanks, the addition of an air pump will ensure the water retains enough oxygen for the fish to breathe.

Do fish sleep?

Yes! But not in the same way we do. Since fish have no eyelids, they cant close there eyes. However they do swim very slowly or rest near the bottom or amongst plants, breathing slowly to slow down their metabolism. Many catfish are nocturnal, prefering to rest during the day and be active at night!
